Choosing the Right Pilates Classes

If you have decided you want to take pilates classes you will find there is a huge variety of classes for you to choose from. Unless you live in a fairly small area where they may only be one or two pilates instructors, you should have a good variety to pick from. So take your time and try and find the pilates class that is right for you.
Several pilates classes will be offering pilates reformer workouts. The pilates reformer is a machine which is used to do lots of different types of exercise. Originally all pilates was performed with these machines, but as they used to be quite expensive, pilates routines were developed that try to copy the movements. All pilates classes will not offer the same thing, nor will you achieve the same benefits from them all.
Pilates classes that don’t offer a reformer will still offer the benefits of the reformer - the movements are just under your control more and can be less structured. All of the pilates moves should mimic the movements that are done on the pilates reformer.
Some pilates classes will be large groups where everyone is expected to bring along their own pilates mats. The instructor will then take the whole group through some gentle pilates movements. Other pilates classes will have mats available to borrow - but if you choose this type of class it’s a good idea to buy your own mat as soon as possible. Pilates Mats do not cost very much, and I’m sure you won’t want to use a mat that someone else has sweated over!
There are often pilates classes held for certain conditions or types, for example pilates in pregnancy, pilates for seniors etc. Pilates is a low impact exercise, but you may also find classes specifically aimed at those that suffer with arthritis or have mobility problems.
If you wanted to you will probably be able to find a pilates class that is combined with either dance or another more active workout.
